Our YTT Focus
The education of Yoga teachers here in the West often falls short with respect to exploring the comprehensive Yogic philosophy that can instill teachers with a greater understanding of the concept of the Dharma or “right action.” When viewed from an expansive and comprehensive perspective, Yoga is moved from an asana-focused (or merely physical) activity to an ancient science that was established to liberate the mind and promote peace. Comprehensive Yogic philosophy has at its core a focus on oneness and unity within the entire collective, including all of humanity and the entirety of nature.
Our teacher training program offers aspiring Yoga teachers and/or Yogis the opportunity to deepen their Yoga practice, while gaining a comprehensive understanding of Yoga philosophy and all its components. At Ananda, our teachers/Yogis will learn to effectively engage in and teach asana (the physical practice), but they will come to understand that asana is only one of the eight limbs of one of the four paths of Yoga.
About Our Lead Teacher
Introduction to Yoga Philosophy and Teacher Training:
In this module, we will engage in discussion, classroom exercises, and initial review of yogic texts, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras, Tantra Yoga and the Four Paths of Yoga, we will explore the value of teaching yoga as our Dharma and being of service to others (seva). Our focus will be on the comprehensive teachings of yoga. Throughout this module, students will be introduced to the foundations of Yoga practice and teachings. Students will attend class lecture, take notes, answer questions, and participate in detailed and organized discussion related to the content and teachings of the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Tantra, and the Four Paths of Yoga. This initial module will offer students the opportunity to gain an overview of the comprehensive teachings of Yoga and the role and lifestyle ethics of Yoga teachers.
Human Anatomy & Physiology:
This module will include the study of the subject and application of its principles to Yoga practice (benefits, contraindications, healthy movement patterns, etc.) as related to human physical anatomy and energy anatomy (chakras and nadis). Students will gain an understanding of safe practice with respect to engagement of the muscles, as well as alignment in practice and assessing the energetic body and considering the effects of alignment on the chakras.
Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics:
This module will provide a comprehensive understanding of Yogic philosophy and lifestyle. This course will be taught with the intention of delivering an intensive teaching of Yogic philosophy as possible with respect to applying them to our current society. There will be an emphasis of outlining traditional and scriptural ideology based on Yogic scripture with a practical philosophical perspective taking into account the current culture. Additionally, students will demonstrate the connection between the classical Yogic texts and ethical teaching practices and lifestyle choices.
Teaching Methodologies: Consideration, Ethics, Accountability, Leadership:
In this module, students will be introduced to teaching modalities required for fulfillment of YTT. Through class discussions, demonstration, writing assignments, required reading, and interactive activities, we will cover the following concepts:
- Communication skills such as group dynamics, the establishment of priorities and boundaries, use of language, and prompting cues. We will engage in lecture and discussion on active vs. passive language and review and demonstrate the effective use of each. We will also address habitual speech/communication patterns and work to become mindful of such patterns.
- Addressing the needs of individuals and special populations (including those with physical disabilities, pregnant clients, and trauma victims) to the degree possible in a group setting.
- Principles of demonstration, observation, assisting/correcting, teaching to the midline. This will include observation of the lead teacher working with alignment principles as present in Anusara Yoga.
- Teaching styles and approaches. We will discuss and review various styles of Yoga asana, including: ASHTANGA, HATHA, IYENGAR, RESTORATIVE, and VINYASA. Students will be instructed in mini asana sessions from each style and will be asked to execute various components from each category.
- Business aspects of teaching yoga.
- Qualities of a teacher/ethics. In this session we will examine, study, and discuss issue related to ethics. These will include:
- The teacher-student relationship
- Physical concerns/consideration
- Student safety
- Appropriate intervention
- Class levels
- Adjustments and touching
- Setting safe parameters
- Charging for services
- Appropriate dress
Meditation, Mantra, and Pranayama:
In this Module, we focus on techniques related to meditation, pranayama, and mantra/chant. Through review of required reading, training manual, lecture, discussion, and class instruction and participation, we will explore the comprehensive benefits of meditation, pranayama, and mantra recitation during modules 1-5. Students will be guided through the use of mantra with a focus on the three Gods and Goddess of Yoga (Vishnu/Lakshmi, Shiva/Kali, Brahma/Sarasvati). Through the exploration of mantra, students will learn and verbalize the benefit of mantra in their practice and their teachings. Additionally, through using the three Gods and Goddess of Yoga as a focal point, students will learn to integrate a deeper understanding of the energies of transmutation, alignment/abundance, and creation.
We will also move into a deeper practice and review of the pranayama techniques that we are covering in this training through lecture, discussion, review of required text, and demonstration. These techniques include: Nadi Shodhana, Ujjayi Pranayama, Kapalabhati Pranayama, as well as the full yogic breath and natural breath.
Meditation teachings and demonstrations will have a focus on incorporating use of mantra and pranayama to prepare the body and mind for meditative practices. We will explore, practice, and demonstrate the instruction of meditative practices through use of breath work, mantra application, guided imagery and review and application of Jnana Yoga (the Yoga of Self-knowledge).
This course is registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level. Once you become certified, you may register with Yoga Alliance as a 200-hour level RYT.
This training consists of ten 20-hour weekend intensives that will take place over ten months.
Students will be in training at the ashram one weekend a month on the following schedule:
Sundays 8:00am- 5:30 pm
Students will also engage in at home study as determined by the manual and syllabus.
